New Mexico has some of the most stunning, rural and rugged scenery we’ve ever seen. On our many trips to Santa Fe (New Mexico’s capital) we will take Interstate 25 to it, from Denver, and US 285 back. This is arguably one of the most beautiful drives in the U.S.A.
Santa Fe itself is the highest altitude US Capitol and has a lot to offer. Great food, amazing art, nearby skiing or National Parks, and good hiking trails. We love it at all times of year, but particularly in winter when the piñon burns in the fireplaces and the new Mexican food tastes even better. We’ve now written about Santa Fe twice. In one of our earlier blog posts we featured the restaurants we love and, more recently, we took a history walking tour and visited Meow Wolf (post here).

About an hour an hour north of Santa Fe, practically equidistant from the city and the Colorado border is the Ojo Caliente Resort and Spa, which we visited for an overnight on the same last trip to Santa Fe.

Prior to COVID, we’d primarily driven through the beautiful countryside and headed for Santa Fe, because we love Santa Fe. However, during COVID times, we chose to remain socially distant and stayed in two lovely AirBnBs way way off the beaten path. One outside of Taos and another in Dixon, around Christmastime in 2020.
