We spent a couple of weeks doing a bit of island hopping on the west coast of Scotland. We spent most of our time on the Isle of Skye where we did some touring and did lots of hikes and walking. We can’t wait to return to Skye and to do more island hopping to the north and west to the outer Hebrides. It is stunningly beautiful, remote and just a wonderful place to spend some time.

From Skye, we traveled south and visited the Isle of Mull from which we day tripped to the small island of Iona and spent a couple of nights on the Isle of Arran. We wrote about our island hopping here.

The islands are worth staying on vs. just daytripping from the cities (you could not reasonably day trip to Skye from Edinburgh, for instance) or the Highlands. They each have their own unique culture and vibe. Some are accessible via bridge (Skye) while others require some pre-planning, particularly in the high season, requiring a ferry. Most require a car to easily travel to and around.
